Senate Panel Approves Furlough Bill – by Robyn Ekings

The Senate Retirement Committee today (June 8th) gave quick approval to a plan that would allow employees of the state’s colleges and universities to protect their retirement in the event furloughs are implemented to trim spending.

HB 673 by Denham Springs Representative Rogers Pope would allow up to 30 days of furlough time for an employee per year. Service credit would be maintained during that time with employer and employee contributions continuing to be made to the worker’s retirement system.

The bill applies to members of the Louisiana State Employees’ Retirement System (LASERS) and the Teachers’ Retirement System of Louisiana (TRSL). Having already passed the House, it now waits for debate by the full Senate.
