Changes ahead for Job Searches at State Civil Service

On February 16, 2009 the implementation of LA Careers online application system will occur.

The LA Careers system will replace the current JOB SEARCH online vacancy posting system and all promotional and direct hire agreements.

It will involve implementation of new Civil Service rules, changes to application screening processes and changes to existing test scores and scoring formulas.

A major advantage of the new system is that it makes submitting an online application the primary method of applying.

Raises delayed for State Civil Service Workers

The state Civil Service Commission deferred action this morning on proposed pay raises for thousands of state workers.

Civil Service director Anne Soileau said Gov. Bobby Jindal’s chief state money manager Angele Davis asked for the delay.

Jindal must sign off on whatever plan is adopted by the commission in order for it to take effect. The commission generally waits for the governor’s decision before taking action so that it does not approve a plan without a funding commitment.

The proposed plans raise the minimum pay for thousands of state employees as part of Civil Service attempts for state government to better compete with the private sector for employees.

Civil Service Urges Increase in Base Pay for some State Workers

Civil Service is proposing to increase the base pay of nearly 7,400 state employees, who are at the minimum pay in their job categories.

Civil Service Commission director Ann Soileau said Monday three options have been submitted to Gov. Bobby Jindal’s budget planners that could bring 3 percent to 10 percent pay raises to many workers.

State government could find filling jobs more and more difficult unless minimum pay increases, she said.

Soileau said she has received no word from the governor’s budget office on the proposals.

Merit increases of 4 percent annually go to most of the state’s 60,000 state Civil Service employees. Civil Service establishes job categories and pay ranges for jobs within them.

The Civil Service proposals would increase the minimum or entry level pay within those ranges

State Civil Service will launch redesigned website

A redesigned internet web site for the Department of State Civil Service is scheduled to be launched on Tuesday, December 11th.

The new web site has been redesigned as “portal” based which allows the user to select the type of content to be displayed depending on their unique needs.

Visitors to the web site can now select from one of four categories – Job Seekers, State Employees, Human Resource Professionals, or Workforce Planning Resources (for supervisors and managers).

This portal based design allows for content to be customized to best serve the needs of the particular type of user.

The address remains the same (http://www.civilservice.la.gov/) and visitors will be directed to the new web site.

Because the technology used to develop the new web site has changed, visitors will have to reestablish bookmarks for pages within the site that were previously bookmarked.

Civil Service Career Day

Civil Service is hosting the Bi-Annual State Agency Career Day at the Baton Rouge Testing and Recruiting Center on Tuesday, June 19, 2007, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

State agencies will be on hand to recruit for Healthcare, Healthcare Support, Social Services, Auditing and Accounting and Law Enforcement Vacancies.
