Governor Vetoes HBs 38 and 988

Governor Jindal issued vetoes on June 8 for HBs 38 and 988 following official requests by the LASERS Board of Trustees. Both bills, as passed by the House and Senate, would have set a dangerous precedent of providing enhanced retirement benefits to a targeted segment of LASERS members.

HB 38 would have required forgiveness of certain debts owed a pension system, and if enacted, could have negatively impacted all public retirement systems by granting special benefits to select recipients.

HB 988 would have provided unfunded retroactive and future enhanced retirement benefits to a small segment of the hazardous duty services.

Check the LASERS website for information on which bills failed and passed in the 2012 Legislative Session.
