Vehicle laws to take effect; warnings planned

New motor vehicle related laws — including one requiring seat belt use by all vehicle passengers — go into effect Saturday, but don’t expect tickets to be issued right away for violations.

State Police Superintendent Col. Mike Edmonson said Thursday people won’t start getting citations if they run afoul of the laws until Oct. 1.

Laws going into effect Saturday for which the State Police Oct. 1 grace period applies include those:
  1. Requiring seat belt use when riding in automobiles, vans and pickups;
  2. Mandating vehicle drivers leave at least 3 feet of distance when they are passing or overtaking a bicyclist;
  3. Requiring motorists on multilane roadways to travel in the right lane unless they are passing another vehicle or the right lane is congested.
