Charter Schools argue retirement system mandate

Proposed legislation that would mandate that charter school teachers be part of a state retirement system has caused dispute between public and charter school associations.

Currently, charter schools can individually opt into the system or go with a private retirement plan.

Teacher unions say charter schools are putting the Teachers’ Retirement System of Louisiana, called TRSL, and individuals’ retirements on the line.

At a TRSL committee meeting this month, Executive Director Maureen Westgard said 49 of the 66 charter schools participate in the state system.

The TRSL board supports the retirement-system mandate legislation, House Bill 156 by Rep. Harold Ritchie, D-Bogalusa.
