Good Turnout on First Day of Early Voting

Secretary of State Jay Dardenne said early voting was heavy in many areas of the state as people decided to vote in advance of the presidential election which occurs on a Tuesday.

The day’s end total of 34,498 registered more than doubled those cast on the first day of early voting in the 2007 governor’s race when 13,980 people voted, Dardenne said.

Early voting in East Baton Rouge topped the state with 3,859 people going to either registrar of voter’s offices or the State Archive Building on Essen Lane on Tuesday. Jefferson and St. Tammany parishes followed with 2,034 and with 1,957, respectively.

People can vote early every day, except Sunday, through Tuesday. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Dardenne is encouraging voters to take advantage of the program.
