Hurricane Gustav may have sights set on Gulf of Mexico

Tropical Storm Gustav could move through the Caribbean during the next several days and then take a path that could bring it to the Gulf packing hurricane force winds by early next week, forecasters say.

It is too early to say where the storm will go with any sort of certainty, but emergency officials across the Gulf Coast are urging people to keep watch on Gustav. They say conditions are ripe for this storm to develop quickly.

"Early indications ... have the system moving through the eastern Gulf," according to Jim Sweeney of the Lake Charles office of the National Weather Service. "All interests around the Gulf will need to stay abreast of the latest developments."
