2-day tax holiday kicks off Friday

An annual two-day “tax holiday” goes into effect Friday for the first time, allowing shoppers to avoid state sales taxes in Louisiana stores.

Certain purchases of up to $2,500 will be exempt from the state's 4 percent sales tax on those two days. That's as much as $100 that stays in your pocket.

The sales tax waiver does not apply to automobile purchases. It applies only to purchased goods — not services such as restaurant meals, hotel rooms or tickets to entertainment events. The waiver has no effect on local sales taxes levied by parishes, school boards and other local governments.
